The first collection shows the ascent of Santa Maria, one of the highest volcanos in Central America. It isn't active, but it is possible to look down into a highly active volcano (Santiaguito).
Lago de Atitlan was heavily praised by Aldous Huxley for its picturesque beauty. It was an opportunity with the old camera not to be missed.
After returning over the Mexican border the next destination was Lake Peten, in the North of the country. No longer at the high altitudes of the western highlands or Chiapas it feels tropical at last. Tikal is nearby to the lake and whilst never the centre of power for the Maya, it was certainly their most extravagant settlement. Visiting it early in the morning gives you the opportunity to explore the ruins without the tourists, its cooler and it is possible to see much more wildlife.
